ReviewReviewReviewCameron Crowe's SinglesJul 12, '07 3:56 AM
for everyone
Category:Movies
Genre: Romantic Comedy
After gawking at the last half of Wes Anderson's wonderful The Aquatic Life with Steve Zissou on HBO, I was delighted that Cameron Crowe's underwhelming Singles was next.

Underwhelming? I was a grunge music fan back in the 90s, and I wasn't so keen on cinematic value then. All I wanted to do was to watch the music bits and count the grunge star cameos.

But this second viewing was different. Singles is a film of a group of twenty-something friends all either lovestruck or lovelorn. Relationship dilemmas come in heaps, courtship woes pile up endlessly on top of each other.

No, I don't relate to Matt Dillon's character nor to anyone else's, but since I AM in my late twenties, am a reluctant member of singlehood, and have fallen victim constantly to the despair of grown-up sentimentality, oh yeah, so what if Tad answered Bridget Fonda's phone call in his cameo, Chris Cornell was 50% effective singing Birth Ritual, and the anthemic Screaming Trees song Nearly Lost You almost had me jump from the sofa to solo-slam.

All I'm saying is, its scary I can see minute, but significant, fragments of my current life hammed out on film.

FOOTNOTE: Cameron Crowe IS best remembered for Say Anything, and ok, Jerry Maguire.

Yep, soundtrack was semi-definitive for that very short period we late 20-somethings still remember as good ol' grunge days.

Dude, anyhting done by Wes Anderson rocks :)

i'm a big fan! i love Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous! i think they are his best works...Vanilla Sky was a let down. The Spanish film Abre Los Ojos, from which Vanilla Sky is based (written and directed by Alejandro Amenabar, who also co-wrote Vanilla Sky), is much, much better.

Aba, ang mga workshop classmates!

Malou, napanood mo yung Rushmore? Kundi pa, hanap na kopya! Dun din si Bill Murray. Pasok kasi talaga mga Murray-Anderson na pelikula.

Noel, I'm not so keen on Almost Famous, siguro kasi naging... Oscar contender ba? Hehe. I've seen Abres Los Ojos, and didn't even bother to waste time or money with Vanilla Sky :)
